I thought of Martha's accusation...

I thought of Martha's accusation,
“Lord, if you had been here....”

when I heard Aunt Julie died
by her own hand

in battle with the pain
of cancer.

I found a birthday card she made.
I don't recall the year.

It marks the book
I'm half-way through.

Her design, Psalm 139,
words she shaped letters for,

“How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast the sum of them!
They out number the grains of sand!
When I awake, I am still with You.”

each line a different colored ink.

I wonder how to hold these words...

and this unfinished grief.

Growing up in Pentecostal churches...

Growing up in Pentecostal churches,  there were missionaries and miracles  and messages in tongues.  There were revival meetings where God's power was supposed to move.  And one evangelist that prayed for me  to receive the “Holy Spirit,”  by which I think he meant  that I should speak in tongues.  And I discerned I wasn't very spiritual. We walk through loneliness...

We walk through loneliness and fight  these broken battles in our brains. Fear strangles light  and chokes the air. We inhabit sorrow, darkness, toil; Oppressed by what we choose and do not choose.
