Tears streaming down the drain

Un-echoed screams

Hand against the shower wall


Heart-numbing solitude

A covered face

That shudders to be touched


Sleepless, weary, pacing

Unreasoned pain

A pillow-smothered sob


The shades and curtains drawn

Oppressive sun

Endless, black-fingered shade


Minutes, weeks pass un-named

Brain-breaking dark

Numb, aching for relief


Gasping the leaden air

Another breath

Another weariness

Growing up in Pentecostal churches...

Growing up in Pentecostal churches,  there were missionaries and miracles  and messages in tongues.  There were revival meetings where God's power was supposed to move.  And one evangelist that prayed for me  to receive the “Holy Spirit,”  by which I think he meant  that I should speak in tongues.  And I discerned I wasn't very spiritual.

Autumn leaves, Carroll County, Ark. One by one things loved escape, people too, like autumn leaves, slip their places and return to earth beneath the trees. Then we cold, hungry children must sometimes be carried home to dine uncomprehending and wonder what we know.
